Why WordPress is a Great Solution for Small Business Websites

We at Lab X Solutions have used and tested several solutions for website design, and we believe that WordPress provides the best solution as far as cost-effectiveness, usability, and scalability.

WordPress is a content management system (CMS), which is really just a fancy way of saying that it is an application that you can use to publish content to the web. It started out as a blogging platform, but has grown significantly to become a very powerful CMS. A CMS is nice because a lot of the back-end programming work has already been done, minimizing the amount of code you need for your website and usually has a nice user interface for you to work with. Custom websites that are coded by hand require more programming, and usually cost significantly more than those created with a CMS. Since we use WordPress at Lab X Solutions, you’re not paying a premium for extra services you don’t need. There are many options in the CMS world (including Drupal, Joomla, Orchard, etc.), but none of them quite stand out like WordPress.

What if your business grows, and you need more customized and dynamic content on your website?

Although WordPress looks great out of the box, and without a line of extra back-end work and programming, the back-end is still accessible. There are many free and low-cost plugins that developers have made to extend the capabilities of WordPress that can add e-commerce, forums, event management, and countless other capabilities, which we utilize at Lab X Solutions on a regular basis. If your company grows to a point where you need a customized widget, or a complex and dynamic online store with thousands of products, or unique features for your registered users, your WordPress site has the capability of growing with you. There is a whole community of developers for hire that can create company-specific features for WordPress sites.

WordPress is free, right?

True, WordPress.org provides it’s open-source solution for free, which we think is wonderful. Just another cost that we don’t have to pass on to our clients. Some small business owners are technically savvy enough that they decide to utilize WordPress on their own and create a small business website themselves. The only cost to them would be domain registration (your URL, www.example.com), hosting (renting space on a computer server to store all the files for your website), and perhaps an SSL certificate (a way of encrypting sensitive data on your website). For those that are a little technically challenged, or simply just don’t have the time, hiring someone to create your WordPress website is the way to go. Although WordPress is relatively easy to setup compared to other solutions, it still has a bit of a learning curve to setup correctly, especially for those unfamiliar with creating websites or working with CMS’s. We have many many years of experience, and can help you get setup quickly.

Is there an easy way to update the website?

You’ll inevitably want to update your website at some point, if not only for the fact that search engines love websites with fresh content. At Lab X Solutions we have a build and train philosophy. We do all the technical setup and design work to build you a beautiful website, then we train you on how to do simple text and picture updates so you don’t have to continue to pay for each change on your website (unless you want to). Our training includes one-on-one instruction as well as a detailed document with screenshots to help you remember what we go over. Because WordPress has a nicely built user interface, you’ll be able to easily update your website without having to think too hard about how to do it.

Let’s talk a little about Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

WordPress has some wonderful features already built-in that allow search engines to find websites built on their platform easily. Lab X Solutions also utilizes WordPress plugins to enhance the visibility of your website to potential customers. In our experience, WordPress has been the most SEO friendly solution for small business websites, and industry leaders agree.

We believe WordPress is ideal for your small business website, which is why we choose to use it here at Lab X Solutions.
